Saint Lambert (circa 640, 708) : bishop of Maastricht, counsellor
of Childéric II. Saint-Lambert's day in on Septembre17.
Proverb : "Today is Saint-Lambert's day, The one who
quits his place looses it" (can't make a rime in English...).
Lambert, marquis of Toscany (929-931) : he helped Hugues of
Provence, his half-brother, to become king of Italy. But, Hugues
of Provence, alleged that Lambert was a bastard, imprisoned
him and slit his eyes. Lambert gave Toscany to his half-brother
Boson.
Francis Lambert (c 1486-1530) : protestant reformer. At the
age of 15 he entered the Franciscan monastery at Avignon, and
after 1517 he was an itinerant preacher, travelling through
France, Italy and Switzerland. By 1522 he became known to the
leaders of the Reformation in Switzerland and Germany. In 1524,
he was active in Strasburg spreading the doctrines of the Reformation
among the French-speaking population of the neighbourhood. He
died of the plague on the 18th of April 1530, and was buried
at Marburg.
Michel Lambert (1610-1696) : French singer and composer. Master
of music of the king's chamber, he became the father-in-law
of Lully. He worked with Lully on the creation of numerous operas
and ballets for the court. He composed simple and unaffected
arias as well as "recitals" and "dialogues"
regarded as opera scenes due to their dramatic tonality.
John Lambert (1619-1683) : member of the English parliament,
born in Calton. One of the Cromwell's lieutenants. He won the
battles of Dunbar and of Worcester against the royal troops.
Anne-Thérèse de Marguenat, marquise of Lambert
(1644-1733) : born an married in Paris, she wrote books on education
and received in her Salon the literate society of her time,
especially Fénelon, Fontenelle, Houdar de La Motte, Montesquieu
and Marivaux. Let us mention Advice from a mother to her
daughter and to her son and Letters to the abbot.
Jean Henri Lambert : French philosopher, astronomer and mathematician
(Mulhouse 1728, Berlin 1777), he published in 1761 an astronomical
theorem which bears his name..., showed in 1768 the irregurality
of pi, took part in 1770 in the development of spherical trigonometry...
in short, the math student of the family !
Charles Lambert, Judge and politician, born in 1735 and died
in 1816. He was a deputy at the legislative assembly, and thereafter
at the Convention. In the trial of Louis XVI, he voted for the
call to the people, for the detention and exile. In 1794, he
was entrusted with the task of surveying the production of arms
in the Haute-Marne and the Côte-d'Or.
Louis-Eugène Lambert (1825-1900) : french painter born
in Paris. He was famous for his paintings of cats.
Léon-Albert Lambert (1847-1918) : French actor born
in Rouen. He played for a long period at the Odeon Theatre where
he created numerous parts with real talent.
Lucien Lambert, French composer, born in Paris in 1861, known
in particular for his lyric drama Le Spahi and his opera
La Flamenca.
Arsène Lambert, French soldier, 1834-1903. He entered
History in 1870 thanks to his heroism in the battle of Bazeilles.
Grand Officer in the Legion of honour, he was also a sculptor
and an author writing about history after having made it. Really
enlightened, he mixed with men of letters, sculptors, painters
and explorers. Good old Uncle Arsène !
Christopher Lambert (born March 29, 1957 in New York) : French
actor. After the acting program at the Paris Conservatoire,
his talent was discovered when director Hugh Hudson chose him
for the leading role in Greystoke, The Legend of Tarzan. Lambert
went on to star in Luc Besson's Subway in 1985, which earned
him the French Cesar award as best actor. Lambert is most widely
known for his leading role in the Highlander series in the 80's
and 90's.
