Newsletter 35 : Opening of the suite Geoffray (May 2008)
Hello to you all,

Thank you and welcome to the numerous new registrants to this letter. Here
is some news since our last letter of December.

Hosting guests
A new suite (Geoffray, from the name of a former owner) with a king-size bed
and a private lounge was opened on April 4th. The room offers a wonderful
view from a wide balcony with a breathtaking sight of the Brionnais.
http://www.chateaudevaulx.com/anglais/rooms.htm
From now on, we can provide for guests two suites and two double rooms. In a few weeks time we will be opening the Grand Apartment which features many rooms.
After meticulous restoration, the original and impressive wood burning stove
has been returned to working order. It proudly stands in the middle of our
kitchen, handsome with its sparkling brass handles and knobs on the black,
cast-iron front panels. As well as simmering dishes it also warms up the entire room.
Last month we inaugurated the opening of the big dining room and also the
kitchen. We put on a dinner for twenty guests. These two rooms benefit from
a very pleasant zenithal lighting.

Works
One of the four tower's roof beam constructions was completely rebuilt. This
gave us a great opportunity to admire the expertise of the carpenters and
roofers of the region.

The garden
In the Park Wood cutter and tree surgeons continue to clean up and to restructure the park and alleyway. The lime tree alley has now been pruned again after a long interval of 15 years!
http://www.chateaudevaulx.com/anglais/parc.htm
All these works allow us to store lots of wood in the stake for endless lovely fires during the next winters. In front of the stake, quince trees have been planted in the middle of the flowerbeds, as well as a mulberry tree. Jams in the future... In front of the house, we planted gorgeous smelling rosebushes and we are impatient to see their first season.
This summer, we will welcome to the park a small troop of boy scouts who
will help us with outside chores.

Animals
After Viki's sad death last December, Rémi welcomed Zelda, a female golden
retriever of three months. Her gentleness makes up for her naughtiness! And
everyone adores her.
We have cows (Charolais, what else?) that a breeder from Saint-Julien has
put to graze in the southeast meadows and we shall soon have dwarf sheep too.

Consulting in decoration
Véronique and Marty continue to work hard on their various decoration
activities and are working not only for private houses, but also have
creations and extensions for châteaux d'hôtes and restaurants. Their clients
are from many different regions such as; Rhône, Ain, Côte-d'Or and
Saône-et-Loire.

To your calendar!

For the inauguration of our 'boutique' in the Château's old saddlery, you are invited to spend a day at Vaulx! On June 14th and 15th of this year, between 11.30 a.m and 6 p.m. You will find a huge amount of decoration items, second hand trade, and also in the park the best nursery gardeners of the area.

On many occasions we have opened our doors to the City Council of Saint-Julien-de-Civry, to the tourist information offices of the region and to the other guest houses and restaurants around.
We have many more projects and lots of energy... Among the projects : settle some bee hives, plant fruit trees, final touches to the apartments.
Finally, a big THANK YOU to all the people who during their stay here have given a helping hand, to clean the rhododendrons, to pint, carry wood, install the henhouse and in particular, thanks to Isabelle, Monique and Jean-Pierre. The friendly presence was a key facture in making it 'happen'....

We count on your visit.

See you soon!

Véronique, Marty, Thierry, Jean-Gabriel, Hugo, Rémi, Vincent et Vitali.

Newsletter 33 : Opening of the guests rooms (September 2007)

Hello to you all,

Thank you and welcome to the numerous new registrants to this letter. Here

are some news since our last letter of June.

Hosting guests

Our summer marathon bore its fruits: we have just opened our first guests

rooms: la suite Choiseul, la chambre Duchêne et la chambre de Mello, thus

called using the names of former owners of the house. Our first guests, two

couples of friends from Holland and who knew château Lambert, arrived on

September 6. Our desire to do it right was largely satisfied when seeing how

our first guests discovered the place. Thank you to them for their fidelity

and their praises.

Our first guests comments

The history of Vaulx

We gathered some new information on the life of the house, especially at the

end of the 19th century when Léon Geoffray, ambassador of France, was the

owner of Vaulx. The lifestyle was then quite different and a numerous

domesticity was active in the offices of the house. Leon Geoffray received much and, until 1920, Vaulx accommodated many celebrities including a president of the French

Republic. On the large coal stove, that one can still see today, banquets of this time were prepared. One of our friends saw this stove with emotion because he was trained on a similar kitchen range in the Parisian grand restaurant Lucas Carton in the 1970’s. He still remembers when lighting the fire in the morning, the hands blackened by coal.

Besides, we were honoured with the lead article of the Journal de Saône et

Loire “Vaulx, a house of good living in the country of well living”. This

article provides many historical elements on Vaulx.

A party in Vaulx on July 22

Our neighbours invited us in our own place. “A district party”, they call it. They prepared everything and we provided the place. One splendid day which was for us the opportunity to be introduced to our neighbours. They all know each other of course. They all live “next door” naturally. In the mean time, we tried to memorize at least some faces and some names…

Wonderful memory: 80 people, two long tables set under the lime trees alley, three large hams roasting since the sunrise, the afternoon spent in discussions and games with Astor Piazzolla as musical background, supper and improvised ball with some accordion under the lampions. Thank you Neighbours. See you next year!

Works

Feverish preparations to open the rooms at the beginning of September (thank you Annie, Caroline, Denis, François, Fred, Germaine, Gerrit-Jan, Jean-Pierre, Julien, Laurence, Marc, Monique, Nicolette, Pauline, Solène, Thierry, Vincent and Virginie, among others, who helped us).

Heavy work planned in autumn to rebuild the top part of one of the towers…

After having visited many houses in South Burgundy, we chose the colour for the external shutters, a deep grey which will fit perfectly, in our opinion, with the gilded colour of the stone and the surrounding verdure. Alas, the current state of the shutters does not allow to paint immediately…

The garden

With the assistance of many friends, we went on cleaning the park. There is still much to do… The violent gale on August 4 night helped us by making fall several dead trees we had to cut apart.

The website

Our website was revised and enriched for a better description of our guests accommodation as well as the place of course.

Newsletter 32 : Work in progress  (June 2007)
Hello to you all,

Thank you and welcome to the numerous new registrants to this letter. Here
are some news since our last newsletter of March.

Living in Vaulx
The relocation process being somehow voluminous and complicated, we
progressively take root into Vaulx. As a matter of fact, we do as Viki and
Néma, our dogs, who quickly became accustomed to the new space and now fully
seize the place.

Works
Some good surprises (particularly some lucky discoveries in the attic: an
old Puppet theatre, an ancient  wallpaper collection) ; some nasty surprises
(primarily some frame problems). Nevertheless, our works progress well. Many
things in process even if the pretty technical results are not yet
spectacular. However let us mention that the guests living room is ready
(see pictures on our website, page “The house”)
http://www.chateaudevaulx.com/anglais/house.htm

In progress too is the park where basic cleaning started (see some new
spring pictures on our website, page “The grounds”).
http://www.chateaudevaulx.com/anglais/grounds.htm
To guide us, we have found an air picture of the park which shows its state
in 1965. We have planted some rose trees and peonies as well as a hydrangea
and a cherry tree offered by Germaine (thank you Germaine!).
Here, the vegetative power is impressive. The frequency of mowing and
weeding reminds us, if needed, that we are indeed in a ground of breeding.
Take courage, Vincent !

Hosting guests

The satisfying development of works enables us to confirm that the first rooms will be available on September 1. We already register reservations. In between, here are some addresses we warmly recommend (see the frame “Friends”, down on the page
http://www.chateaudevaulx.com/lambert/en/links.htm)

Very heartening news: the famous guide Alastair Sawday, the reference B&B guide selected us for their 2008/2009 edition.

A splendid proof of confidence and a strong encouragement for all of us.

Newsletter 31 : from Lambert to Vaulx (March 2007)

Hello to you all,

Château Lambert's team grows and moves.

A year ago, we felt for a house in the beautiful Charolais-Brionnais region. Noble residence whose foundations date back to 16th century, the château de Vaulx is in the middle of a park of several hectares overlooking the valley of Saint-Julien de Civry, Oyé, Saint-Christophe in Brionnais and, far away, Charlieu. South Burgundy lies at your feet. A breathtaking sight! You feel like you could almost touch the sky.

Those among you who knew Lambert know how much we like to make revive a house. After several visits and long discussions between the four of us, we went for it.

Thus we will leave, at the end of the month, our dear Lambert, the Beaujolais region and the vine to migrate about fifty kilometres further west.

We look forward showing you the new house but have to ask you for some patience. We need some months of work before being able to accommodate you as we did in Lambert.

Our first guestrooms will be ready on September 1, 2007.

If you are brave enough, you may come and visit us this summer to see the house and the work in progress, with a brush or a rake! Hasty lodging available.

Wishing to share our dreams with you, as well as to while away, we already put on our website few pictures, historical elements and some attractions of our new neighbourhood.

Our newsletter will keep you informed.

Best regards,
Château Lambert's team
